Introduction to the
Metta Bhavana Practice

The beautiful Metta Bhavana practice (lovingkindness & goodwill) is one of the two foundational Buddhist practices, both of which I have practiced for almost fifty years.

This is a beginners intrductory class.

This practice will eventually lead the practitioner to experience one or more of the four Brahma Vihārās, also known as the also known as the Four Immeasurables (Sanskrit: अप्रमाण, apramāṇa, Pāli: अप्पमञ्ञा, appamaññā)[1] or four infinite minds (Chinese: 四無量心).

The Four Brahma Vihārās

  1. Loving-kindness, benevolence and goodwill (maitrī/mettā)
  2. Universal Compassion (karuṇā)
  3. Empathic joy (muditā)
  4. Sublime Equanimity (upekṣā/upekkhā)
